Hardwood Flooring Installation: Hardwood, Engineered, Pre finished, Laminate

If you’re wanting to install new floors, Distinctive Floors is ready to help you choose the right wood for your home and lifestyle. We carry a wide selection of wood species and brands to help you decide. 

 As our client,  you will know what to expect at every stage.  Once the choices are made and the timeline set,  we ensure that your project experience is smooth.

Here are a few things that we do as part of the floor install.

• Remove carpet, particle board subfloor if any.
• We install the right thickness of plywood or vapor barrier if necessary for the hardwood.    
• To acclimate the wood to the temperature of your home,  we deliver the wood a few days prior to your project start date. This helps minimize chances of moisture or buckling after install. 

How long will your project take? Here’s a rough estimate: It takes about 14 hours to install 500 sq ft for an experienced installer .

Recoat & Reseal: Bring Your Floor Back To Life!

Refinishing is a 2 step process and an affordable way of restoring the beauty of your floor.

Hardwood floor refinishing was a labor-intensive and time consuming process up until the 1920s. Workers would have to get down on their hands and knees and drag scraper blades across the floor until the wood was uniformly exposed. The floor was then finished with two coats of orange varnish and then waxed. When marred or worn, the shellac was scrubbed off and then reapplied.

With the invention of the electric belt sander and edger in the 1920’s, the process of hardwood floor sanding became streamlined. 

 

 

Step 1: Sanding

At Distinctive Floors, we use a sequence  of sandpaper from rough grit to very smooth on the machines to remove the polyurethane coating and any surface imperfections from the wood. We hand scrape areas that a machine cannot reach to achieve the best results. 

At this point you have the option of changing your floor color. 

Step 2: Finishing

Once the floor is bare, we apply a sealer to close the grains. Once the sealer has dried, we sand the hardwood floor with a buffer and an extremely smooth sanding screen. This assures for a smooth and even application of polyurethane. 

Next, we apply layers of a water-based polyurethane to the hardwood flooring, allowing plenty of drying time between each layer. We carry Eco-Friendly, low odor/low VOC, and water-based finish options.

Screen and recoat is often called “buff and recoat”. This process freshens up your floors and takes out some of the dullness and minor scratches. Don’t expect a buff and recoat to take out deep scratches, gauges, or discoloration.

Screening is a quick process and you can typically return home in the evening without a problem. We will use a buffing machine and abrade the old finish on your floors. We will then vacuum the area and apply a fresh coat of finish giving your floors their old shine back.
